'Just build a fence': Frustrated Father Keeps Finding His Neighbor's Dogs on His Property, Considers Calling the Pawlice to Protect His Family

Hey, dog dads and doggo moms. We just want to say one thing to you: be very demure and very mindful with your pups. Not everyone likes dogs, and let's be honest, your dogs are probably not as well-trained as they should be. But that's okay! You don't need them to be military-trained as long as you are responsible with your doggos and mindful of others. For example, if your dogs regularly go onto your neighbor's property, maybe you should invest in a fence or better training for your dogs, just saying.

After finding his neighbor's dogs on his property multiple times, including once where there was almost a dangerous incident, this frustrated father approached his neighbors and asked them to keep them off his property. They responded with the fact that their doggos are 'just a baby', but that doesn't mean they can wander wherever they want! The father keeps recordings of it, and is considering to call the pawlice to protect his family. Are you with him, or not?

    I live in a suburban neighborhood with single family homes on roughly 1/4 acres each. My neighbors behind me have 4 large dogs, two are aggressive breeds (pit and a rotty.) I don't know if they are aggressive and I don't care to find out.

    They used to have an invisible fence and less dogs, now it's 4 dogs and they let them out with no leashes or way to contain them. About a month ago I went outside to put old food into my composter and the rottweiler heard me and started growling/snarling/barking and ran across the property line straight up to me. I thought I was a goner. I stood still and luckily he just smelled me and then stared

    This is terrifying, and honestly, one of our worst fears as a dog owner. Our doggos are so sweet, but they are still dogs - anything can set them off in a bad direction. As well trained as they can be, they still have strong instincts.

    me down for a while until he finally listened to my neighbor and ran away. I told her they need to do something about the dog coming into my yard because obviously it's scary. She agreed then said "oh but he's a baby." And I told her I'm sure he is with them but I don't know him and he don't know me. She said she'd talk to her boyfriend about doing something.

    Yeah, these neighbors are not going to do anything. This is the equivalent of being invited to something and saying, "Yeah, I'll think about it." - that means you're not going.

    After that incident I bought cameras and now see their dogs enter my yard multiple times per week so they still haven't done anything to contain them. They've probably been doing this for 6 months or more i am just now seeing it. I have saved every video of them coming over.

    I am venting but I'd also like advice on this situation and maybe to get gassed up a bit haha. I plan on speaking to them one more time about it but I am not sure how to approach it other than telling them their dogs can't be on my property, and that's the law.

    My plan is to again speak to the woman because she was polite when the last incident happened and I'm not familiar with her bf. If they don't fix it within a week or 2 after that I'm going to call the police or animal control and show them all the videos I've saved and tell them about the incident of the dog running up on me. Edit: thank you for all the advice so far, I'm surprised how many would just build a fence, which is great that''s definitely an option for resolution.

    Green_Mix_3412.7 mo. ago One more warning is generous. But report them to the police going forward. Initially the cops are just gonna warn them. If they fail to contain their dogs after that animal control may step in. That dog ran up to you and growled. Nope. Not ok.

    daitcs55 7 mo. ago Not a solution but reminds me of my grampa who was splitting some wood when a dog started towards him, barking and snarling. The owner yelled "He won't bite you". Grampa just stood there, axe in hand, and replied "You're God damned right he won't".

Dog owners can be quite defense if they are not caring properly for their dogs and may want to make you the problem. You also might want to discuss this at r/dogfree sub. Most communities have leash laws and limits on how many dogs can live in one household as well. There may be multiple violations.

    Miguel4659 7 mo. ago Fences are not cheap. THEY should build a fence, not you, if they are going to have large dogs. Tell them to contain them or get rid of them, as if they get on your property and threaten you again, you will call animal control to have them taken away.

    CenterofChaos 7 mo. ago I own a dog and think it's fucking ridiculous when people let them wander. I don't know what it's like where you live but reporting to animal control comes to mind. Especially if they're displaying aggressive behaviors and not recalling quickly when the owner calls. I'm a fan of fencing. It's not cheap but a good fence solves a lot of neighbor problems. This neighbor is obviously going to be a problem.

    • Melgariano 7 mo. ago Call your local ACO. Let them know you have video of the dogs going onto your property and that you've already asked the neighbor to address the problem. They can fine the neighbor for violating local ordinances.

    burnermuch 7 mo. ago • I also have this problem, and a sprinkler system I can control from my phone. They've gotten wet a couple times, hasn't deterred them from coming back but at least I get some enjoyment out of the situation. Seriously have no idea how people cannot keep their dogs locked up. Our Golden retriever is the sweetest guy in the world, but I'm not going to let him just roam the neighborhood.

    AlfredRWallace 7 mo. ago In my city you call bylaw. They will give a warning the first time. If it continues and you send a photo the owner gets a fine, then a larger fine, and it escalates. Honestly bylaw is pathetic but most people will make sure they take care of it after the first visit.

    WinterPrune4319 7 mo. ago A lot of good advice here. I'd probably also say hey I've got some plants in my yard that are poisonous to dogs so you should really keep them in your yard. Maybe that would incentivize them to keep their dogs away.
